He attended Topeka Public Schools and later attended Menninger Bible School.
The Rev. Johnson was a hard worker and was employed by Kansas Sand Co. for many years, where he retired. He later owned and operated dump trucks and the Johnson hauling Co.
He was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. He served on the deacon board and sang in the choir. He was called into the ministry and served as an associate minister faithfully until his health failed.
He married Thelma Harris in June 1965. They divorced, but continued to remain close friends.
The Rev. Johnson was preceded in death by a sister; four brothers; and a son, Daryle “Petey” Johnson.
He loved his family and leaves to cherish his memory a son, Arlin J. Johnson, and his wife, Yvonne, Oklahom a City; two daughters, Benita Douglas, Kansas City, Mo., and Lanie Stewart, and her husband, Darrell, Topeka; a brother, Walter Johnson, Topeka; two sisters, Barbara Jean Simpson, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ida Mae Rice, Topeka; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Topeka Cemetery. The Rev. Johnson will lie in state after 4 p.m. Monday at Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
