JOHN STEWART CROMWELL was born March 31, 1827 in Summerfield, Dallas County, Alabama. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Jones on December 21, 1848 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. John & Elizabeth had eight children between 1850 and 1863, namely Mary Ann LaDora, Gaston Winfield, Pleasant Galespee, John Caraway, William Augustus, Lucinda Caroline, James Lawson and Harvey Francis. John enrolled at Oxford on February 19, 1862 at the age of 35. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army for three years at Grenada, by Lt. Burnett, on March 15, 1862, Private, Company A, 29th Regiment Mississippi Infantry. He was transferred June 29, 1862, to Company C, 1st Battalion Mississippi Sharp Shooters, Confederate States Army in Tupelo, Mississippi, which subsequently became Company C, 9th Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters. He left sick at Glasgow, Kentucky on September 12, 1862. He joined his company again in January 1863, and served until April 16, 1864 when he was granted a 30-day furlough. He rejoined his company and was shot and killed in action on May 27, 1864 near New Hope Church, Georgia, at the age of 37.
