Sgt. Leland Champion In Plane Crash
A memorial service was held in the Belleplain Methodist Church Sunday evening for Staff Sgt. Leland Champion Jr., 20, who succumbed to injuries sustained in France, November 19. Rev. Harold J. Dunn conducted the rites.
Sgt. Champion, whose father operates a Belleplain sawmill, died of a fractured skull sustained in a plane crash. He was a tail gunner and had been in action against the enemy.
Sgt. Champion entered the service 13 months ago and went to England last July. He was assigned to a control depot of an air service command station.
His brother, Oliver, who enlisted three years ago, now is at home on furlough.
