Merle W. Hopkins Found Dead In Car
---Merle W. Hopkins, Route 3, Marshall, was found dead in his car at 5:25 a.m. Sunday. According to sheriff's deputies, Hopkins had run a hose from the exhaust of his car, which was parked in the garage at his home on the Partello Road, through the rear window of the car and his death was termed a suicide by a Calhoun County Medical Examiner.
---Hopkins was last seen by his wife, June, when retiring about 9:30 Saturday night.
---When Mrs. Hopkins awoke shortly after 5 o'clock Sunday morning she could not find her husband and upon hearing the car running went to the garage where she found her husband.
---It was reported Hopkins had been in ill health and despondent for several years.
---Born July 21, 1918 in Shelby, Mich., he was a son of Benjamin J. and Hazel May (Woodward) Hopkins. A resident of this area all his, he served in World War II as an athletic instructor, was a graduate of Marshall high school in 1937 and a member of the Brooks Memorial Methodist church. He was a self employed carpenter.
---On April 30, 1946 he married June Ansell in Jerez, Mexico, and she survives along with two sons, Merle, Jr., and Robert Lee at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin J. Hopkins Marshall; four brothers, Benjamin K., Carroll, Burton and Bernard, all of Marshall, and a sister, Mrs. Edward (Marjorie) Cummings, Marshall. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and aunts.

Funeral services for Merle W. Hopkins, Route 3 Marshall, who was found dead in the car at his home Sunday, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Court funeral home with the Rev. Frank Gillett, of the First Baptist church, officiating. Burial will be in Rice Creek cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
