David Laird was born in Moscow, Idaho, the only son of Ray Carlisle and Aime (LaCerte) Laird. The family moved to Hermiston, Ore., in 1940 and then permanently to Lewiston in 1948.

David was in the first graduating class of Webster Grade School. He was the starting center on the 1954-55 Lewiston High School Bengal football team that went undefeated and was nationally ranked. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

In 1955 he graduated from Lewiston High School and then attended the University of Idaho where he was a charter member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He graduated in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in education. That same year he was employed by the Lewiston School District where he taught sixth grade at Orchards Elementary School for six years, then sixth grade at Garfield Elementary for a year before combining teaching with the principal's job for another year.

In 1968, he became principal at Whitman Elementary, staying for six years. He then was named project director for the Title III Communications Skills Through Authorship program, a district-wide reading program.

From 1977 to 1983, David was principal at McSorley Elementary, and from the fall of 1983 to 1991 he was principal at Webster Elementary. The last three years before retirement in October 1994 was as principal at McGhee Elementary. In all, he spent 35 years in the Lewiston School District.

He retired from the school district as School Administrator in October 1994 after 35 years service.

David was married to Phyllis K. Cochrane on Dececember 27, 1961, at Potlatch, Idaho. In 1967 he received his master's degree in education from the UI.

In 1966 he was named the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Educator. He had received an award from the Washington State Junior Golf Association for his promotion of and assistance to children wanting to learn the game of golf. He helped children learn through events such as hoop shoots, science fairs and enrichment days and also coached soccer and golf. He was also a supporter and volunteer of the Valley Boys and Girls Club. He announced sports events that were held at Booth Hall, the LHS gymnasium, and was an avid booster of all Bengal sporting events, both boys and girls.

He was a member of the Lewiston Congregational-Presbyterian Federated Church and the Lewiston Elks Lodge No. 896. He was a life member of Lewiston Parent Teachers Association.

His only sibling, a sister, died at the age of 16 in 1960. David had two sons and one daughter.

Died at age 57 years, 4 months, 22 days.
