He died at Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was the son of Robert and Elaine Fitchard Van Slyke.

He married Hilda Mackey on March 3, 1950. She passed away June 10, 1986.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1946 and went to work at Rome Air Force Depot. For a few years he worked in canning factories and also picked hops. He was in the New York National Guard, the United States Army and served five years in the Army Reserve. After his military service he went to work for the New York Telephone Company in Utica. Several years later he transferred to Ogdensburg and then to the Canton/Potsdam area. He served twenty years as president of local union # 1128, C.W.A. and retired after 46 years at the telephone company.

Surviving was a step-granddaughter, Kimberly Tyler and her husband Dr. Ryan Tyler; five great grandchildren John, Mary Joseph, Anne and Faustina and a long-time friend, Sarah Stone.

He was predeceased by an infant son in 1956 and a step-son Ronald Driscoll, Ogdensburg.
