Nancy Newton Harwell, 77, of Sherrills Ford went home to be with Her Savior on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1932 in Mooresville, to the late Tennyson Holmes and Hattie Dingler Newton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Newton and sisters, Helen Poston, Margaret Riggleman and Doris Dagen.

Mrs. Harwell was a retired teacher's assistant for the Newton-Conover School System. She was an active member of Olivet Baptist Church in Catawba, where she taught Bible School crafts and delivered sermon tapes to shut-ins.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, James Monroe Harwell Jr.; children Vickie Gardner and husband, Max, of Shelby, Susan Higginson and husband, Dave, of Belmont, and Eric Harwell and wife, Racheal, of Sherrills Ford; grandchildren, Chris Perry and wife, Jessica, of Shelby, Jason Drum and wife, Amy, of Kings Mountain, Michael Drum and wife, Angel, of Belmont, Todd Higginson and wife, Ashley, of Gates, Michael Pierce of Wilmington, Matthew Pierce and Luke Harwell, both of Sherrills Ford; great-grandchildren, Presley Drum and Harper Drum of Kings Mountain, and Kyle Higginson of Gates.

The family would like to thank the hospital staff and the Critical Care Unit at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center for their compassion along with the professional care given and loving attention shown to Nancy and her family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Olivet Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Olivet Baptist Church, Building Fund, 7893 Monbo Road, Catawba, NC 29609. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home is serving the Harwell family.
