Clarence "Cully" Cullimore, architect AIA, passed away peacefully with family members at his bedside April 20, 2014, Easter Sunday, at age 88. His family is profoundly grateful that he suffered no loss of acuity or comprehension before his going home to his Lord. Born in Bakersfield April 12, 1926 to teacher, and author Clarence Cullimore Sr., architect FAIA, and teacher Rosemary Cullimore, he attended Roosevelt, Emerson Junior High, and Bakersfield Union High School where he cultivated lifelong friendships.Cully enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. He married first wife, Melba Frances "Mike" Cullers, in 1945 in Memphis, TN, before the end of the war. He and Mike raised 5 childred and lived in Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Mateo, Sacramento, and Stockton, CA. After the War, Cully graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Architecture. He was employed by architectural firm of Ernest Kumph in San Francisco and became a licensed California architect. He practiced privately in San Mateo and in Bakersfield. A career architect, Cully worked 27 years for the State of California, in Sacramento, with a 3-yera stint as Director of Building Safety for the City of Stockton 1972-1974. In 1987 Cully married his beloved 2nd wife and true soulmate, Lillian Louise Sciaraffa. They lived in Davis CA until he and LIlly retired and moved to Bakersfield where they set up house in the home Cully's parents bourght after they married in the 1920's. Cully and Lilly enjoyed travel in the US visiting friends and family and travelled abroad. Together they travelled to England, Ireland, Costa Rica, the Carribbean, Panama, Mexico and Hawaii. In 2010 Cully was awarded the California Preservbation Foundation's President's Award in recognition of his work over the 15 years he served as Executive Director of the State Historical Building Advisory Board and his relentless efforts since 1976 to develop and finally implement the 'California State Historical Building Code'.The code now applies to all qualified historical properties in California. Cully was active in 20-30 Club in Bakersfield and Sacramento and volunteered in scouting with his sons. He was a member of the Sacramento Yacht Club from 1967 until his death. He served as commodore, and was active in the past commodores' Old Salts. While a SYC member Cully designed the current clubhouse in West Sacramento, and was active in Sea Scout ship Trident with his children. After retirement and his return to Bakersfield, Cully served 4 years on the Bakersfield Historical Preservation Commission. He and Wife Lillian were active members of Son's in Retirement, Petroleum Production Pioneers, Retired Public Employees Association of California (RPEA), and last summer Cully helped organize the 70th high school reunion for his graduating class of 1943. He also met monthly with a handful of congenial guys from his graduating class. Cully was pre-deceased by: his father, Clarence Cullimore Sr.; mother, Rosemary Thelen Cullimore; 1st wife, Melba Frances "Mike" Cullers; youngest son, Noel Timothy "Tim" Cullimore; and his beloved 2nd wife, Lillian L. Cullimore. Cully is survived by:his sister: Joanne Cullimore O.P.; step-daughter Deanna Sciaraffa of Huntington Beach, CA; son Clarence Cullimore (III) Mercer and wife Barbara of Mt. Angel, OR; son Michael Cullimore and wife Ailynn of Hagatna, Guam; Sean Cullimore and wife Tammy of Novato, CA; and Holliday Cullimore of Vallejo, CA. Cully is survived by grandchildren: Esther "Evie" Noor and husband Harris, Jennifer Cullimore, Wade Varner, Bradley Cullimore, Aaron Cullimore and wife Christina, Carly Cullimore, Rachel Cullimore Miyamoto and husband Motea, Bailey Cullimore, Katherine Cullimore, Ian Cullimore, and by great-grandchildren: Sumiah & Qasem Al-Dabashi, Andira Lahsoon and last, of course, his sweet little 15 year old Bichon Frise' Peppy Mon Cheri' who is now living happily in Huntington Beach with Deanna. Cully is also survived by his close helper-friend Cleofus "Cleo" Wiley. The family thanks Cleo for all the invaluable help and assistance he has given Cully durin these later years. Cully lived and loved his full life with style. His humor and compassionate heart will be missed by all who knew him. Family and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at St Francis of Assissi Church 9AM Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Commital will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
