Shirley was born on May 24, 1943, in Stone Mountain, Ga., to Elbert and Mollie Bell (Ergle) Payne. She married Charles Robert Ayers on May 2, 1964, in Oakwood, Ga., and followed him over the globe as his faithful "Army Wife" during his 29 years of service.
They settled in the Lake of the Woods area of Locust Grove, Va., over 11 years ago.
Survivors include her son, Charles Scott Ayers and his wife, Keri; her daughter, Stacey McKinney; two brothers, Bobby Payne and his wife, Barbara, Charles Payne; one sister, Kathy Amos; and sister-in-law and her husband, Lynda and Don Townley; and four granchildren, Cody McKinney, Megan Ayers, Bradley Ayers and Logan McKinney.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014, from 1-2 p.m., with the funeral services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Amos Healy officiating. Private burial will be at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Rainbows for Daphne, a 6-year-old cancer patient at www.gofundme.com/96lu04.
