Dart moved from Kanab to Fredonia when he was five and was raised in the home where Alan Judd now resides. He completed the eighth grade at the Fredonia Public School and at the age of 13 started herding goats with Frank Farnsworth in Johnson Canyon and the Sand Hills area. He eventually acquired a goat herd of his own.

Dart served in the Medical Division of the U.S. Army for the last ten months of World War One at Camp Kerney, CA. After being discharged he returned to Fredonia and then served a mission for the LDS Church to the Seattle Washington area.
