Hildegard was the first of ten children born to August Ludwig and Adelia (Zinck) Billigmeier. She married Edwin Alvin Dobler in 1928, and had five children by him: Shirley Anne, 1929 (Shirley was adopted out in 1936, because of the lack of food to live on - a heartwrenching decision for Hildegard); Lloyd Earl, 1930-2008; Jeanette Verdella, 1932; fraternal twins, LeRoy Alvin, 1934-1993 and LeMore Allen, in 1934.

Edwin died in 1935, and on 6 Nov 1936, she married Frederick "Fred" M. Hertel, who was also a widower with eight children of his own: Leonard, 1925-2015; Alfred, 1926-2015; Hertha, 1928-2008, Raymond, 1929-2012; Martin, 1931; Lawrence, 1932; DeLainis, 1933 and Willie, 1934 (Willie was fostered out to Fred M.'s cousin, Fred F. Hertel, where he grew up). They had a farm near McLaughlin in Corson Co., S.D., with a big house, 4-5 bedrooms and a huge kitchen, with a 12' table in the middle and benches along the long sides.

Hildegard and Fred had five more children: Harvey Sylvester, 1937-2002; Rodney August, 1944-2016; Delray L., 1947; Stanley Wesley, 1950 and Timothy Neal in 1952. Altogether 14 boys and 4 girls, who lived to adulthood. In 1960 Hildegard and Fred retired and moved into McLaughlin where they had built a house for themselves.

When the Dobler kids got older, they set out to find Shirley, and found her in Minneapolis, Minn. Later, they had a family picture made with all 18 children in it. What an occasion that was!

Hildegard was a good mother, a very good wife and a wonderful lady, who always seemed to be so calm and easy going. Her death was indeed a sad occasion.
