STROKE FATAL TO 66-YEAR-OLD C. T. TEACHERTO Michael J. Concannon Dies Hospital After Brief Illness in Michael J. Concannon, 66, of 122 North Poplar Street, principal of the McKinley School, Coal Townsmp died early this morning in Shamo- kin Hospital from the effects of an apoplectic stroke sustained Tuesday His death ended a teaching career of 50 years. The veteran educator was enjoy lne the Washington Birthday vaca tion when he as stricken without warning, lapsing at once Into unconsciousness. Mr. Concannon was taken to the hospital, where It was found the stroke was one o." unusual severity, and from which he could not be rallied. Michael J. Concannon, son of the late Thomas and Ellen (Devlin) Concannon, was born in Shamokin May 1, 1877. His forbears were among the earliest settlers of the western section of Shamokin. As a youth he attended St. Edward Parochial School, and when the high school there was founded, was a member of the first graduating class of June SO, 1894, thereby becoming the oldest member of the school alumni association, of which he was historian at the time of his death. Graduating from high school at the age of 16, Michael Concannon was elected a member of the teaching staff of Coal Township schools, beginning as a grade school teacher. He subsequently became principal of the Gass Hill School, Trevorton Road, later at Garfield School, and for the past 20 years at McKinley School. Over a period of years during his teaching services, Mr. Concannon attended special courses at Pennsylvania State College, where he received degrees In English, and he served a score of years as teacher of the continuation and extension schools. Long a student of English and poetry, the veteran Coal Township teacher specialized as an English teacher and many times entertained various gatherings, reciting and Interpreting poetry. - A member of St. Edward Church from childhood, Concannon transferred his membership to St. Joseph Church when the local parish was divided in 1913. He became a charter member of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph parish and the Roman Catholic Knights of St. George. He was a member also of the Maine Fire Engine and Hose Company, Edgewood Civic Association, Edgewood Honor Roll Association and a veteran member of the Edgewood District election board. Michael J. Concannon and Miss Kathryn G. Moore, member of another pioneer Coal Township family, were married in early life in St. Edward Church. Mrs. Concannon preceded her husband in death in 1937. Surviving are the following children: Sister Justa Marie, Order of Mercy, Williamstown; Frank, United States Army Air Force, In service the past two years in Australia and New Guinea; Thomas L., Hocal insurance company official; Mrs. Kathleen R. Haile, wife of John Haile, United States Army, and Miss Mary R. Concannon. at home. Other survivors are a brother, Thomas D. Concannon, West Chestnut Street merchant, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday morning with solemn high requiem mass In St. Joseph Church, beginning at 9:00. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Edward Cemetery.

Michael Joseph Concannon was born May 1st, 1877 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas (1841-1898) and Ellen Devlin (1840-1898) Concannon. In early life, like other males members of his family, he worked in the coal mines. Because of a foot injury, he later worked as a school teacher, rising to become the principal of the McKinley Annex on West Arch Street in Shamokin. He died February 25, 1944 at age 66

Michael married Kathryn Genevieve Moore (1885-1937)on August 6th, 1906 in St Edward's Church, Shamokin.

The children of Michael Joseph Concannon and Kathryn Genevieve Moore Concannon were:
1) Thomas Leo Concannon 1907-1952
2) Anna Marie Concannon 1909-1971 - in religion known as Sister Josita Marie, Regligious Sister of Mercy. Entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1928.
3) Francis (Frank) Joseph Concannon - 1916-1995
4) Catherine Rita Concannon 1919-1991 - married to John Joseph Haile (1919-1973)
5)Mary Roberta Concannon - born 1924 - married to John (Jack) Matthew Brennan (1916-2002)
