James "Carl" Firestone
1921 - 2013
VETERAN

Early Life: Carl was born on February 4, 1921, in Leslie, Arkansas, to James Blaine and Emlie Lavada "Vada" Millsaps Firestone. Carl and his family moved to Drummond, Montana, in 1923. He attended Gaylord Gulch School, Hall Elementary and Drummond High School.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Carl served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific on the destroyer USS Bailey from December 1941 to December 1944. Following the war, he worked on local ranches where he fed several hundred cattle with nothing more than a team, a wagon or a sleigh, and a pitchfork. On November 6, 1957, he married the love of his life, Betty Lorensen, in Deer Lodge, Montana. Carl continued working on local area ranches and Betty taught elementary school. After years of very hard work and determination, Carl and Betty bought their first ranch near Drummond in 1962 – the Firestone Ranch. Beginning in 1973, Betty and Carl worked the T Bar Three Ranch until retirement in 1991. After retiring, they built a home set back in the beautiful woods near Maxville. Being such a hardworking and industrious man, Carl was never fully retired. He set up his own dirt and gravel hauling business in 1993 and continued working until 2010. He successfully renewed his commercial trucking license at the age of 81 – a testament to his independence, strong will and tough resolve. Carl was always at home on the ranch. He loved his horses, his cattle, his trucks and heavy equipment. He loved family gatherings, especially big dinners on Sundays and holidays where his stories would have everyone laughing and reminiscing. Carl and Betty enjoyed playing cards with friends and visiting with neighbors. He was truly one of a kind. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was one of the last remaining of the "greatest generation." James "Carl" Firestone, longtime Flint Creek Valley rancher, passed away in Philipsburg, Montana, on Monday, June 10, 2013.
Family Message: "As we've often said, 'They just don't make 'em like Carl anymore.'"
