Second husband of Rebecca (Achor) West Challender (1836-1916). They were married on March 12, 1872 in Clinton County, Ohio. Charles was the son of John and Lydia Ann (Southard) Challender. He was the father of three children with Rebecca: Marilla, Rebecca Ann and James Squire Challender. Charles was married previously to Mary J. (Dove) Challender on February 6, 1864 in Highland County, Ohio. He had at least two children with Mary. Charles died from a gunshot wound. He was a Civil War Veteran of Co. H, 27th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on August 14, 1861 and was mustered out on February 12, 1865. Some of the battles his regiment fought in were Little Blue, Missouri, Kennesaw Mountain and the Georgia campaign.
