The son of Joseph Anton Sutter and Susanna Mueller Sutter, Albert was born in the village of Niederglatt, in Sankt Gallen Canton, Switzerland. He immigrated to the U.S.A. about 1880 and became a naturalized citizen. Worked as a carpenter for the Susquehanna Coal Company.

A Roman Catholic, his fiancé, Augusta Pelke (a Lutheran) told him that "if he wanted children they were getting married in the Lutheran Church." They subsequently had 11 children, all but one of which survived to adulthood.
