Alyce Marie Motley

Alyce Marie Motley, 76, of Wichita, Kan., formerly of Anderson, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, after a battle with cancer.

She was born April 8, 1929, in Anderson to Joe Sarlls and Myrtle Smith Sarlls.

She moved to Wichita in 1952.

She married John P. Motley on April 6, 1957.

The couple moved to Tulsa, Okla., in 1958 and lived there until 1964, when they moved to their farm west of Anderson.

She was a homemaker and worked in the McDonald (Mo.) County High School Cafeteria for 17 years.

After becoming ill in 2001, she moved back to Wichita to be cared for by her sisters.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, embroidering tea towels and making handmade quilts.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, John P. Motley, on Jan. 3, 1997.

Survivors include a son, John B. Motley of Anderson, Mo.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosilea Hodson and Kenneth Hodson of Anderson, and Anna Wedan and Roy Wedan, and Beverly Cook and Dennis Cook, all of Wichita; two granddaughters, Amanda Motley of Wichita and Nicole Motley of Anderson; four nieces, Sheila Bowers of Anderson, Lori Jones of Neosho, Mo., and Terry Mears and Carmen Golledge, both of Wichita; a nephew, Kevin Wedan of New York City; a great-niece, Kendra Mears of Wichita; an aunt and uncle, Hattie and Ralph Leuellen of Anderson; and many cousins.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Walker-Dowd Funeral Home of Anderson, Mo., with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Walker-Dowd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Derald Compton.

Burial will be at the New Bethel Cemetery in Anderson.

Pallbearers will be Roy Wedan, Kevin Wedan, Edward Golledge, Bret Mears, Dennis Crabtree and Jerry Francisco.

Memorials may be made to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202; to Victory in the Valley, 3755 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67218; or to the Kansas Humane Society, 4218 Southeast Blvd., Wichita, KS 67218.

The McDonald County School District has purchaseed the Walker-Dowd Funeral Home building in Anderson.

The district is not planning to get into the funeral business, but instead plans to turn the building into space for its central offices, according to Dr. Mark Stanton, superintendent.

The Walker-Dowd Funeral Home will close its doors at the end of May 2012.
