Johann Schnuriger was the son of Franz Joseph Schnuriger and Anna Maria Sophia Schmucki. Johann had five brothers: Alois Schnuriger,Josef Balthasar Schnuriger, Alexander Meinrad Joseph Schnuriger, twins Adolf Schnuriger and Josef Schnuriger, and two sisters: Luisa Maria Schnuriger Frei, and Elisa Schnuriger. Johann Schnuriger emigrated to the United States from Havre, France on the ship Gosgonia, working his way for passage as a baker's assistant. He arrived in New York on January 1,1888. Upon arriving he found a job in New Jersey working for a bakery. One aspect of his job at the Bakery was delivering bread to Thomas Edison in Menlo Park, New Jersey. About the year 1895 he moved to Galveston, Texas and he survived the Great Hurricane of 1900. At a later date he moved to San Francisco, California and witnessed the Great Earthquake of 1906. He then came to San Antonio, Texas in 1911 and found a job as a baker for the Medina Dam Construction Company. He also was employed for many years as a cook with the Railroad. He met his bride to be Josefa Matschl in San Antonio. Johann married Josefa Matschl on Feb 4, 1913 in St.Joseph's Catholic Church in San Antonio,Texas. Their children were: Eleanora Lourita Schnuriger Murray, Adolph Joseph Schnuriger, Louise Josephine Schnuriger Schoenert, John Lewis Schnuriger, Joseph John Schnuriger, Mary Ann Schnuriger, Francis Waldema Schnuriger, and Robert Lee Anthony Schnuriger.
