Both parents died while he was still a pre-teen. About 1908 he went to live in the family of an adult cousin in Beckwourth, California. He made Beckwourth his home from that time on. He worked for the California Division of Highways for 24 years. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
On October 19, 1972 a neighbor came to check on Cyril and found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was survived by his wife, who died 14 years later in Plumas County on September 15, 1987; one daughter, Adeline Delores "Dolores" Moller, also of Beckwourth; and two granddaughters, Karen Elizebeth "Kay" Patterson Bell and Hazel Charmone "Cheri" Marsh Ketchum.
