About 5 pm as the miners were waiting for cars to take them out of the mine for supper there was an explosion.
62 men died that day. Had the explosion happened 15 minutes sooner that count could possibly have doubled.
. Edwin is listed as W.E. Cox head carpenter
and in one newspaper report he is listed as Edward Coach head carpenter. but he was among the first 13 bodies found.
He may have been talking to the foreman James B. Bruce at the time. Every account I have read states James B. Bruce was struck by flying timbers in the blast and killed instantly. and E. Cox is always the next named. 16 year old Jeremiah Crawford was also struck and killed by debris.
2 men who were walking home, after leaving the mine stopped to watch a dog fight and were killed by the impact of the blast.
. Many of the miners that just left the mine, became members of the rescue team. It took several attempts and into the night to clear the path back into the mine, under caved in conditions to find the miners still in the mine.
. They had hope of survivors just being trapped, until they saw some signs of burning. When the reached the first ones, and the next group they were burned beyond recognition and all hope of any survivors was gone.
Edwin's brother in law, Aaron Butte were among those killed deeper into the mine.
