Hammond, 76, Loved her family, horses and nature

Dorothy Wiltsie Lapham Hammond died peacefully May 12 with her family at her bedside at St. John's Medical Center following a long illness. She was 76. Her family provided the following.

Dorry was born in Syracuse, New York. She attended the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, followed by Wheelock College and Syracuse University to persue a teaching career. A 23-year resident of Jackson, she was a beloved wife, grandmother, mom, sister, daughter, homemaker, loyal friend and dedicated community volunteer. She loved the four seasons in Jackson Hole, the wildlife that ate her flowers, Phelps and Jenny Lakes, pickleball at the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center, her evening glass of white zinfandel with dinner, and her Appaloosa horse, Shadow, at Trinity Ranch.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Allen Hammond; a daughter, Elizabeth Hammond Carlson; a son, Robert William Hammond; three grandchildren, William Alan Carlson, Rigdon Tucker Kimo Hammond, and Riley Jean Maukeala Hammond, all of Jackson; a sister, Susan Lapham (Joseph) Spalding of Skaneateles, New York; a sister-in-law, Rena Barbour Lapham of Closter, New Jersey; and numerous neices and nephews all over New England. She is also survived by two stepsisters, Mary Scott of Sarasota, Florida, and Hope Cushman of Bravard, North Carolina; one stepbrother, Edward Wilkinson of New Canaan, Connecticut, and a cousin Beverley Lapham of Meredith, New Hampshire.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Gray Lapham, Jr. and Carrie Ernestine Wiltsie Lapham; two stepmothers, Helen Flaherty Denison Lapham and Mary Van Duyn Wilkinson Lapham Hill; and a brother, William Wiltsie Lapham.

A family graveside service will be held this fall with Pastor Ray McDaniel presiding. Her ashes will rest in Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson. There will be no calling hours.

The family would like to especially thank her amazing friends who provided support and encouragement to her in times of need, and the doctors, nurses and caregivers who grew to know her in her last days.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be considered in her memory to Jackson Hole Horse Rescue or the St. John's Hospital Foundation Oncology Fund.
