Born in Winchester in 1850, Samuel Slade Holton married Laura Ann Fisk in West Medford on 10 December 1873. The couple had four children, but only Ernest Spaulding Holton (1879-1934) survived childhood. A stone marker set in the ground to the rear of the Holton monument marks the resting place of Samuel Socrates Holton II (died aged 4, 1878); Walter Wentworth Holton (died 1877, less than 1 year old); and Blanche Wilhemina Holton (died 1884, 20 days after her first birthday).
Holton's older sister, Elizabeth Jenkins Clapp Holton, married Moses W. Mann in 1870. Their memorial is immediately southwest of the Holton monument.
