Dorothy June Finnerty, 72, died on Jan. 9, 2006, at her home in Warrenton, surrounded by her family and close friends and under the care of Hospice. Mrs. Finnerty was born to Luther "Andy" Anderson and Jean Buccheri Anderson on June 18,1933, in Queens, N.Y. She grew up in New York's Flushing neighborhood and spent summers in her father's hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss. At the end of World War II, her father, a major in the U.S. Army, was assigned to Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, N.Y. She graduated from Staten Island's New Dorp High School and then attended Notre Dame College, where she met her future husband, Francis "Frank" Finnerty, while in college. The Andersons moved to the Bavarian town of Augsburg, Germany, where Mrs. Finnerty was a member of the first class of the University of Maryland in Munich. Her future husband had joined the Army and drew an assignment to Salzburg, Austria. He appeared on her doorstep on a Christmas morning, and they married in May 1954 in Augsburg. Their first home was an old farm house on the outskirts of Salzburg, where daily wood chopping was required to keep the house fires burning, a story Mrs. Finnerty delighted in telling. During his military career, the couple and their five children traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. They enjoyed camping in northern Italy on the banks of Lago Degrade, viewing the Masters in the museums of Amsterdam, visiting the Pope at Castle Gandolfo and the catacombs of Rome, skiing in the Alps of Austria and Germany and visiting with close friends in Garmisch. They moved in 1970 to the Warrenton area, which became their permanent home upon Frank's military retirement. Mrs. Finnerty was active in scouting and in Officer's Wives Club activities. She was a voracious reader, an excellent seamstress and was often called upon to substitute teach. She dabbled in real estate, loved designing and working in her flower gardens and became a veritable artist in the field of quilting. Mrs. Finnerty loved discussions about politics, religion, current events and even ancient history. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and her home was always decorated. She is survived by her daughter, Casey-Lynn Finnerty; sons Kris (Carol), Francis "Andy" (Kay), Matthew and John Burke (David); and three grandchildren, Joella Nicole Finnerty, Austin Rutherford Finnerty and Benson O'Brien Finnerty; her sister and loving caregiver, Jean Ellen Power of San Antonio, Texas; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 44 years, who passed away in 1998. Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A funeral liturgy will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton. She will be interned with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow at St. John's Parish Hall from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Capital Hospice, 9300 Lee Hwy, Fifth Floor, Fairfax, Va. 22031, or Whitman Walker Clinic, 1407 S St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009.
