William Thompson "Billy" Ward was the son of Milton and Martha Davidson Thompson. He married Mary Polly Keen, daughter of William Keen and Nancy McLaughlin, on March 4, 1844, in Tazewell County, Virginia.

William served as a Private in Co C, 34th Battalion Virginia Calvary, Mounted Rifles, under Witcher, during the Civil War.

Known Children
James, Martha and John, however there were two small illegible headstones beside Billy's, and we are assuming they were most likely infants of Billy and Mary Polly.

The Cemetery is located near the location of William and Polly's home place, which according to their great granddaughter, Birdie Ward Slone, the house sat below the grave. Birdie also gave me his middle name as Thompson, the family name, rather than Thomas as many have stated in research. (Sadly, Birdie passed in 2019.)

Directions: Turn off of Aus Keen Road onto Lookout Tower Rd, on top of Keen Mountain, where the Antioch Church sits. If you follow this road to the end, it will become an access road for the gas company. There will be a locked gate. You must gain permission from the gas company before accessing the property. LRC

Gravesite Details

His grave is about 1 1/2 miles after you cross the gates. Once on the lane, take the first right, and a switchback. You must leave the graveled road and use 4x4 up a small hill to reach the gravesite.
