The daughter of Joseph and Emma (Collings) Atkinson, Irene was born June 14, 1918, the youngest of nine children. She attended Butte schools and married Clarence Nelson; they later divorced. She later married Joseph P. Casey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; parents; and eight brothers and sisters.

Caring for her family and friends was Irene's life's work. Driven by her love of children, she worked with the Foster Grandparents Program, where the children adored her as much as she did them. She will be remembered by her family and friends for always putting the needs of others before her own.

Irene is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph Patrick Casey of South Carolina, Bob and Carol Nelson, and Ron Nelson of Butte; and daughters and son-in-law, Jolene Casey and her fiancé Edward Esquibel of Butte, Sherry and John Becky of Hamilton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
