Mary grew up in Hadley Massachusetts attending Hadley Academy and later Smith College and she began her career teaching in Hadley where she resided until her marriage in 1880 to Attorney Fred Smith. Fred was born in Iowa, his parents coming from New England. They married in Clarkston New York where Fred was engaged in his profession.
By the following year, the couple had moved to Saginaw and started a family. Fred and Mary had three children, Clinton and Sidney and a child who died young. After Fred died in 1910, Mary remained in Saginaw where she died at age 76 and was buried with her husband. She was survived by one brother, Charles Bonney of Hadley Mass.
