Alice was a boarding student at the age of 12 in 1870, at Sacred Heart Academy in Salem, Oregon. Sacred Heart was established in 1863 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The Academy was educating young women and accepted all students from every denomination. The school closed in 1984. Alice was buried in the same plot as her father, Charles Edward Fendall in Buck Hollow Cemetery.
When Alice died in 1900, her children were “parceled out” to different families (relatives) in the valley. Leola being the oldest, and 16 years of age, went off to work in Portland as a house girl for a family named Philabum or Fillabom. When she left their employ, she began working for the Telephone Company in Portland, and once put through the first continental call to Chicago.
Note from Merna Madge (Maddux) Jergentz: “My mother, Betty (Salmi) Maddux, died a few days after my birth in 1926, Leola and Lawson set up housekeeping and they raised me and I lived with Lawson until his death in 1951. Leola was the only mother I ever knew”.
