John was born about 1867 in Danesmoor, Derbyshire and was thus in his early teens when he died. He was a son of Henry & Ann Beeson. John grew up with his family in the Danesmoor/Clay Cross area and lived near the Greyhound Pub. His siblings included Aaron, Samuel, Miriam, Bertha Ann, Mary & Elizabeth. John was schooled locally, and is described as a scholar on the 1881 census. However shortly after that he left school, as was commonplace at about that age at the time, and became a coal miner like his father and his two brothers. John had not been a miner long before he was killed, aged just 15, in 1882 in an accident at the Park House Pit in Clay Cross, where he was employed as a Driver. His father Henry and his brother Aaron were also killed in the same accident, an explosion that killed 45 men and boys.
