Raymond E. Bernier, 74, of Yarmouthport, MA, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a courageous struggle with cancer on May 27th, 2014. Born in Pawtucket, RI in 1940 to Louis and Germaine Bernier, Ray lived a very joyful life. Ray graduated from Providence College in 1961 and soon began his career of forty years in the high tech industry with his first job at Honeywell. He spent his last twenty years working for Yankee Atomic and Duke Energy. However, Ray always pointed out that he worked to live and didnt live to work, and his life reflected that through his lifelong love of his favorite pastimes: sailing, gardening, golfing, and cooking. Ray married the love of his life, Rita OBrien of Weymouth MA in 1967. Ray always told his sons this was the best decision he ever made and it showed, especially during the very special retirement years. Ray and Rita were inseparable over their 47 years of marriage. They loved to travel both locally and abroad. They attended their grandkids numerous sporting events. They enjoyed movies and dinners together. But mostly they enjoyed hosting family and friends on Cape Cod. Ray was happiest when surrounded by his loved ones; whether this was playing cards with his cousins, golfing with his sons, or spending time with his grandkids. Ray led a simple, but incredibly happy life. He took a genuine interest in the lives of his children and was most at ease sharing laughs with his boys on the deck of his Cape Cod home. His smile and laughter will never be replaced. Ray will be remembered most for his joy of life, his love of family and his faith. At his core, Ray was simply a good, kind hearted man and anyone who had the pleasure of getting to know Ray admired and respected the way he went about his life. He will be forever missed. Our family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support, prayers, and encouragement over the last twenty months. During what was a very trying time, we never felt alone. Ray was the beloved husband of Rita Bernier. He was a proud father of four boys: Paul and Deborah Bernier of Wilbraham MA, Mike and Ellen Bernier of Scituate MA, Pete and Heather Bernier of Southborough MA, and Steve and Anne Bernier of Harrison, NY. Raymond is also survived by his eleven adoring grandchildren. Raymond was brother to Father Paul Bernier, Lucille Bernier, Tom Bernier and his wife, Judy. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday, May 30, 2014, from 4-7pm, in the Hallett Funeral Home 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth MA. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, at 10am, in the St. Pius the Tenth Church, Station Ave, South Yarmouth, followed by burial in Ancient Cemetery, Ancient Way, Yarmouthport. Donations in Rays memory may be made to VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, Suite G-1 South Dennis, MA 02660.
