Melvin Elbert Whitmire, 63, of 518 S. Ninth St., died Saturday evening at Memorial General Hospital in Las Cruces.
Mr. Whitmire was born Aug. 22, 1915 in Woodson, Texas, and came to Deming in 1930. During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps and in 1946 he married Ruth Spain in Deming.
He was retired from the Luna County Road Department and was a member of the first Methodist Church.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Jeffrey Symonds, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.
Mr. Whitmire is survived by his wife, Ruth at the home; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Bettie Ruth) McCarter of mesa, Ariz.; a son, Robert Whitmire of Tempe, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Karri and Shane McCarter of Mesa, Ariz.; six brothers, Jack Gardner and Roger Gardner of Deming, Gene Gardner of Houston, Noble Whitmire of California, Bill Gardner of Hatch and Charles Gardner of Gila; five sisters, Ophelia Salyer and Thelma Pelayo of Deming, Gladys Stephens of Palm Springs, Calif., Floretha Graham of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Shirley Spiceland of Pomona, Calif.
An infant, Alma Louise, preceded him in death in 1959, and an infant son, Kenneth Edwin, died in 1961.
Pallbearers will be Von Rue Crawford, Bill Russell, Carl Hoagland, Wayne Ragland, Rayburn May and Mitt Whittemore.
The Wheeler Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
