From the Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss., May 15, 1939, p. 1:
One of Jackson's pioneer residents with many memories of the city's growth down through the years passed away Sunday night in the death of Mrs. R. F. McGill, 86. Born in the very same house in which she died at 823 North Jefferson, Mrs. McGill was one of three surviving children of James H. Boyd, one of Jackson's earliest mayors. She was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian church of Jackson, both in age and in term of membership, since she had united with the church in young girlhood, and continued a devoted member of active communicant of the church until the end. Her mind crystal clear and her body remarkably vigorous, Mrs. McGill continued her Christian, neighborly ministrations well past the four-score mark in years.
Funeral services will be held from the First Presbyterian church this afternoon at 4 o'clock, preceding interment in Greenwood cemetery here. Her pastor, Dr. J. B. Hutton, will conduct the obsequies, with elders of the church serving as honorary pall bearers. Active pall bearers will be Stokes V. Robertson, Carson Robertson, James A. Alexander, Major Calvin Wells, George Lemon Sugg and J. W. Tucker.
Mrs. McGill is survived by one son, R. F. McGill of Memphis, one daughter, Miss Mary McGill of Jackson, one brother, James A. Boyd of Wesson, and one sister, Mrs. Lyman Gunn of Nashville, as well as by several nieces and nephews.
