Kin Kills Self;
Blames Illness

HOLLYWOOD, Cal. Retired Army Maj. George E. Steunenberg, 84, brother of Frank Steunenberg, former Idaho governor, who was assassinated in Caldwell, Idaho, in 1905 by Harry Orchard, shot and killed himself Monday before the gaze of a neighbor woman, police reported.
Police said the elderly soldier shot himself through the head as the neighbor, Mrs. Sally Jones, was walking to greet him on his front lawn.
Investigators said Steunenberg left a note reading: "To my friends, I have two incurable ailments and I can't go on. Life has become a trial." The note I was signed "Major."
Steunenberg's brother was killed in Caldwell by Orchard, who still is serving a life term in the Idaho State prison for the slaying.
Orchard was accused of the murder, along with William (Big Bill) Hayward, leader in the International Workers of the World movement at the turn of the century.
The two were defended by the famed criminal lawyer, Clarence Darrow. Haywood was acquitted of charges he hired Orchard to kill Steunenberg.
Major Steunenberg is survived by a sister, Mrs. Josephine Mumford, of Caldwell, Idaho; a nephew, Ben V. Wyngarden, of South Pasadena, Cal., and a niece, Mrs. H. T. Blake, of Van Nuys, Cal.
