A native of Keller, he was the son of the late Burl B. and Georgia Maddox Stateham. He graduated from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. A geophysicist, he retired from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and was instrumental in developing mine safety techniques for the U.S. government and also Great Britain. He received a Meritorious Service Award from the secretary of the interior of the United States.
He was a member and deacon of Mallard Point Baptist Church.
Survivors: Son and daughter-in-law, George M. and Lynn F. Stateham of New Bern, N.C.; grandchildren, Rebecca Darrah of Cypress, Calif., Stacy Stateham of Rockford, Ill., and Bret Stateham of San Diego, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren.
