He is buried in an unmarked grave near his friend, Peter Joseph de Tevis. His brother Lucien Maxwell managed the Maxwell Land Grant. They were the sons of Hugh Maxwell born in Dublin, Ireland in 1777. Fernando was first married to Caroline Matilda Allen in 1838. She died shortly after their marriage. When he moved to Taos he married Franesca Trujillo. (Information obtained from The Taos News, 23 November 1967 when his historic home was given to the Kit Carson Memorial Foundation.)
