James Alexander Maxwell, 77, died at 3 AM Saturday, Nov. 5, 1994, at his Lafayette residence, after being in ill health for the past year. Born Jan. 9, 1917, in Garfield, he lived in Lafayette most of his life. He married [third] Helen L. Moore on June 2, 1984, in Lafayette; she survives. [He was first married to Vera Iona Cain on May 30, 1937; they divorced. A second marriage was in 1972 to Mildred G. Redinbo Miller; she died in 1982.]

Mr. Maxwell was a truck driver for 32 1/2 years. He worked for J.A. Grant and Son and was last employed at Briggs Transportation, retiring in December 1976. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1945 until July 1946. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign wars Post 1154 and American Legion Post 439 in Colfax and a member of Eagles Lodge 976 in Frankfort, and Teamsters Union Local 543.

Surviving are two daughters [from his first marriage], Betty (Mrs. William) Glover of Rossville and Karen (Mrs. Darrell) Kinman of Lafayette; a son, Richard A. Maxwell of Lafayette; a stepdaughter, Dianna (Mrs. Ronald) Cheesman of battle Ground; a stepson, Charles W. Moore of Rob Roy; four sisters, Doria (Mrs. Lester) Ellis of Brownstown, Norma (Mrs. warner) Lane of Anderson, Mrs. Catherine Harwood and Mrs. Carolyn Hunt, both of Crawfordsville; two brothers, Donald L. Maxwell of Colfax and Darrell Maxwell of Darlington; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six brothers and four sisters. Service Nov. 8, Hippensteel Chapel; internment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens with military rites.
