A Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music student was killed last Thursday morning when the small plane he was flying crashed shortly after takeoff from the Lowell Airport.
The pilot. Dean Nereson, 24 of Grand Rapids, was pronounced dead on arrival at Butterworth
Hospital.
The crash took place about 8:20 a.m. when the single-engine aircraft nose-dived into the ice-covered Flat River. Nereson was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by the Lowell Rescue Unit.
Principal Operations Inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration Ramon Navarro, has been probing the plane, taken to a hangar at the Lowell airport, to determine the cause of the crash.
Nereson's flight last Thursday morning was to be part of his training for a commercial pilot's license as he had hoped to become a flying missionary in Alaska.
He was bom in Los Alamos, New Mexico, but grew up in Colorado. After attending Bob Jones University in North Carolina, he went back to Colorado to start a church in the tiny mining village of Oak Creek. He also worked full time as a carpenter and coal miner before coming to the Bible School in Grand Rapids, in January of this year.
He is survived by his wife Connie; two sons Timothy and Nathan; his mother, Laura Watts; a brother, Ron and a sister Pat Coulimore, all of Colorado. The body was flown to Colorado for burial.
