Joe was postmaster at one time in Yorka, MS. He was a farmer and also ran a cotton gin. He was ruptured while plowing, at the age of 73, when the plow kicked back on him. He died on 7 June 1906 and is buried beside his first wife, Caroline, in Bethel Cemetery, Leake Co, Mississippi.
He served in the Civil War; enlisted 20 Dec 1863 in Leake Co, MS. Served in Company A, Col. Perrins 11th Calvary as a Private. He surrendered at the end of the war in 1865 at Washington Co, GA.
