BOONEVILLE – Smith Goddard, 89, left this life to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 24, 2014, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born March 3, 1925, in Prentiss County to Clyde and Mattie Belle Goddard. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Norfolk, Va., and Key West, Fla. He served proudly in the Navy until 1946. He was an active member of the National Guard for several years.
He married the love of his life, Virginia Pounds, on March 12, 1949. In 1955, he attended Jones Junior College and became a master watch and jewelry repairman. In 1958, he founded Goddard's Jewelry in Booneville. He built a very successful business along with his brother, James Goddard. Due to his health, he retired in March 1974. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1958 and fought it until his death.
As a man who always wanted to keep busy, he started raising cattle on the farm he loved. Later, he and his wife built a home on that farm.
He became a Christian as a young boy at Crossroads Methodist Church during a revival. After he was grown, he became a member of East Booneville Baptist Church and worshipped there from 1949 to 1986. He served as an ordained deacon, church training teacher and served on many local and associational committees. In 1986 he became a member of Gaston Baptist Church, which he attended until his health declined.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 305, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and a member of the A&A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He was a member of the American Legion, life member of Disabled American Veterans and life member of Paralyzed Veterans of America. In 1999 he received an honorary Booneville High School diploma from Principal Rickey Neaves.
He will be remembered by his family as a man who loved his God, his family and his country. In spite of his many setbacks in life, his faith in God grew stronger and he was a wonderful example of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
