He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII where he received a Good Conduct Medal; a WWII Victory Medal; an American Campaign Medal; and a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars. Stuart was a member of East Berlin VFW; Spring Grove VFW; and VFW Post 7374. He enjoyed hunting. Stuart is survived by three daughters, Connie R. Gehr of York, Nancy M. Nickol of Abbottstown, and Debbie A. Sherman of York New Salem; a son, Stuart L. Altland, Jr. of Abbottstown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Coit L. Altland and Junior D. Altland, both of Dover; and two sisters, Gladys E. Altland of York and Miriam Altland of Dover. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
