JAMES LEWIS worked as a farmer in his teens, then as a painter, later as a grocer, and was last listed on the 1900 census as a farmer. A newspaper article dated June 1902 and reprinted in the Morning Star on 9 June 2002, listed a JAMES LEWIS as having sold cigars and "kept open a pool room" on a Sunday. For this he was hauled "before Justice Lane" where, despite the evidence of witnesses who testified they played pool at his establishment, plus the fact he offered no defense, he was acquitted by a jury.
