Funeral service is 2 p.m. today (Friday) at the United Methodist Church, Scotland, with the Revs. Katter and Dennis Thum officiating. Burial is in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 155 and VFW Post No. 2966. Pallbearers are Dennis Bietz, Roger Cass, Duane Dean, Bill Fox, Roger Hakl, Greg Popma and Gale Scholl. Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home, Scotland, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 26, 1923, to Cornelius and Sarah (Wassenaar) Popma at Sioux Center, Iowa. He moved with his family to California in 1941 and graduated from Excelsior Union High School in Norwalk, Calif. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California until he entered the United States Air Force in 1943 and served for three years. After returning to Iowa, he moved with his family to Scotland in March of 1946. He married Viola Muehlbeier Jan. 15, 1947, at Scotland and they farmed until 1971 when they moved into Scotland. He was employed at Cargill Inc. for 15 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Scotland Golf Club and bowling league for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Viola of Scotland; one son, Larry (Venita), Park Rapids, Minn.; two daughters: Pam (Dennis) Bell, Lee Summit, Mo.; and Cindy (Wayne) Brown, Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman, Sioux City, Iowa; and one sister, Lois Kirscheman, Grand Bay, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
