A veteran of the Civil War Daniel enlisted in Company B, 5th Cavalry Regiment Kansas on September 16, 1861. He served with Colonel Powell Clayton. He was transferred on January 27, 1862 from Company B to Company H, 5th Cavalry Regiment Kansas. He was promoted to Full Corporal on March 4, 1862. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on October 8, 1862. He was mustered out on December 8, 1864 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was in such engagements as Helena, Pine Ridge, Cotton Plantation, Little Rock, Marks Mills, being by General Francis M. Drake when he wounded and helped take him from the field.
