Herman Louis Bunch devoted 30 years of his life serving his country in the United States Army, ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was stationed first in Hawaii, then at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and finally at Seattle, Washington, in the Engineer Corps. Herman fought in both World War II and in the Korean War, receiving Purple Hearts for wounds obtained in each of those conflicts.

He married Betty Felton on Mary 9, 1949, in Newport, Pend Oreille County, Washington. It was his first marriage, her second. Betty was born October 19, 1906, in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. Although she had children by her previous marriage, Herman and she had only the one child, Raymond Earl Bunch, in common.
