SEARS - At Garden Prairie, Ill., on Thursday, Dec. 6 1877, HARRIET, wife of Mr. Horace O. Sears., aged 57 years, 7 months and 27 days.
Mrs. Sears was born in Chittenden county, Vt., and when about 16 years of age, came west with her father's family. Her father, Mr. Ames, was one of the earliest settlers in this part of the State. After her marriage to Mr. Sears, she continued to reside in the same neighborhood, and had therefore been a resident of Garden Prairie for more than 40 years. During these years she endeared herself to a large circle of friends, who will long cherish her memory. Her life on earth has ended, but her influence will still continue to be felt as a blessing by many. She was an earnest and devoted Christian, and has been a member of the Congregational church, of Garden Prairie, from the time of its organization. During her last illness, which continued nearly two years, she was a great sufferer. Days of pain were followed by nights of wakefulness and weariness; none but those who have passed through a like ordeal can realize what she endured. But from first to last she experienced an unwavering trust in her Saviour. Her light shone brightly during this long night of trial, and gave unmistakable evidence of the power and reality of the religion of Jesus. That Saviour who had led her in the discharge of life's duties, who sustained her in the days and months of pain and sickness, has called her to himself. She has closed her eyes to these earthly things which pass away and has opened them to "see the King in his beauty." She leaves a husband and three sons who mourn, because they shall no more meet her in the earthly home, but who rejoice in the assurance that she has gone to that brighter home above.
Funeral services were held in the Congregational church, on Sabbath, Dec 9th, conducted by Rev. J. N. Hutchinson, of Marengo. A large concourse of friends assembled and thus express their appreciation of the character and life of the deceased, and their sympathy for the bereaved family. J.N.H.
