Jason Spangenberg

LAYTON -- Jason Garis Spangenberg Jr., 88, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Bristol Glen, following a short illness. Jason was the youngest of seven children born to Emily 'Emma' and Jason Garis Spangenberg Sr. His six siblings were born in Millbrook, and in 1919 the family moved to Layton.

Jason Spangenberg was a graduate of Newton High School's class of 1937. He was a member of the CCC Camp Group in 1941, and planted many trees in Sandyston Township. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Fort Dix, Maguire Air Force Base, and was sent to India, where he was a top mechanic working on disabled aircraft.

Jason built his home a short distance down the road from where he was born. Having been raised on a dairy and vegetable farm, he continued with his expertise and raised a wonderful apple and peach orchard, a rhubarb patch and a large raspberry bed. Many neighbors, friends and relatives benefited from his gardening each summer.

Jason and his brother Hixon drove school buses for the Sandyston-Walpack Township school and transported several generations of grammar school children. Jason was very active in politics and served on the Sandyston Township Committee for 20 years, becoming mayor for five terms. He was a very fair, knowledgeable and ultra-conservative mayor. He also owned his own paint and paper hanging business, and was extremely proud of each home or place of business he had beautified.

Jason was predeceased by two brothers, Roy James Spangenberg and Hixon Hursh Spangenberg; four sisters, Julia Dwyer, Mary Alice Ike, Norene Urban and Geraldine O'Brien; and his wife, Ottilie Macaughey.

Mr. Spangenberg is survived by nine nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; 30 great-great nieces and nephews; a stepdaughter, Dale Macaughey Lawson, her husband, Jack, and their children, Jack and Heather.

There will be a get-together of Jason Spangenberg's family and friends at the Sandyston Municipal Building, 133 County Highway 645 (Hainesville Road) on Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. Welcome.
