He married in Green City, Sullivan County, MO, on 22 Oct 1895, Lillie Ann Reed who was born 25 March 1875 and died 26 Jan 1943. She lived in a sod house as a young girl.
Edward was a par-time farmer. He was also a storekeeper in a general merchandise business in the towns of Reger and Mystic. At the time of his retirement, he had a hardware store in Sumner, MO, which he closed in 1929. Edward and Lillie lived in Green City, MO. From about 1935 until about 1960, they lived on a farm near Sumner with their son, Ernest.
Edward was known to his neighbors as 'the old gentleman' for his honesty and gentlemanly instincts. A story goes that one outside his hardward store in Sumner, an inebriated man was viciously beating a horse tied at the rack. Edward grabbed a new whip off his wall and rushed outside saying, 'I'll horsewhip YOU sir, if you don't stop that!' He was a kind man, who, with his wife, herself sternly upright, reared 6 children who never had a blemish on their reputation. He would correct his grown, middle-aged sons for swearing and himself was content with 'Dag-Blame'! {Bruce William Moffitt}
