Esther Alma was born to Rufus James Jenkins and his wife Alma Augusta Maechtle on March 11, 1913 in Washington Park Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. By the age of 5, she had lost both of her parents. Her father, Rufus, died from tuberculosis in 1917. The family story is that her mother, Alma, died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Esther was then taken in and raised by her aunt, Emma ("Emsie") Maechtle Nussbaumer and her husband, August Nussbaumer. She continued to keep in contact with her brother, Thomas, who was adopted by another one of Alma's sisters, Anna.
