The family surname was Maulden as the census records and earlier tombstones of the Maulden family show, it eventually evolved to Mauldin.

Some family researchers say he died in Jefferson county Alabama from diabetes and is buried in Quintown Alabama.

From the US Appointments of US Post Masters 1857-1875 of Jefferson county, Alabama, John W Mauldin was appointed US Post Master of a township named Coal Creek in Jefferson county Alabama. The Coal Creek Mine was in this area. This township no longer exist. There is a Coal Creek in Walker county Alabama, but not to be confused with the township of Coal Creek in Jefferson county Alabama where John Wesley Maulden was Post Master.

Elizabeth Mauldin is on this record as it appears she served out his term from 02 Mar 1859 to 13 May 1859, this township was discontinued on 01 October 1859.

Many of the Maulden men were US Post Masters.

From other records, John Wesley Maulden owned land near what is now West Jefferson Alabama in Jefferson county near the Walker and Jefferson county line very near Coal Creek Mine about 6 miles from the township of Graysville which claims the Coal Creek Mine.

Coal was found along the creek bed of Coal creek in this area in 1830, thus Coal Mining began in Jefferson county along with five other counties in Alabama.

His sister, Nancy Maulden Logan is buried at Deerman Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Steele, St Clair county Alabama.

Another son in the huge Maulden family named John Wesley Maulden.

Methodism was introduced in the Georgia Colony which were Cherokee homelands in 1736 by John Wesley and spread throughout the Colonies. Many of the Maulden family were Methodist, but some did marry wives of other faiths.
