He was born May 9, 1933, in Rockbridge County a son of the late Allison Ayres and Catherine Rader Ayres.
Mr. Ayres was a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church, member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and was a life member of the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department. Alfred loved to hunt and fish but mostly loved to just be outdoors.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ada Mae Ayres; one son, Alfred Hileman Ayres Jr.; one brother, John Ayres all of Lexington; and one sister, Rosa Lee Bogaev of Fredricksburg.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery by the Rev. Barton Hellmuth and the Rev. Jim Bollinger.
