Dr. Stanley LaVurle Echols, age 85 of Troy, AL., died Thursday, May 1, 2014 at his residence. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 2:30 pm in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Rodney Outlaw officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Green Hills Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Dr. Echols was born on July 14, 1928, in Taylor County, Texas. He was a longtime professor of psychology from Troy University, with 17 years dedicated on the main campus. He was an avid fan of bluegrass music; honed his musical talents on the harmonica, guitar and sang hundreds of songs. He was a veteran of the US Navy, as well as an ordained Baptist minister having pastored churches in Texas, Wyoming and Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Ellis Echols of Cisco, TX; his mother, Marguaritte Lewallen Rogers of Mineral Wells, TX; three brothers and sisters and an infant son. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Echols; his beloved Calico, 3-legged cat "Cali"; sister-in-law, Florence Echols of Cisco, TX; niece and nephew, Sheldon and Teresa Doty of Troy; other numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Martha Kate Roney of Dothan.
