A MYSTERIOUS DEATH
Prominent Young School Teacher Meets Tragic End.
The body of Walter Ulm, a young man who was but recently engaged by the Garrett board of education to succeed H. D. Dick as teacher in the eighth grade here next season, was found in the woods adjacent to the home of his parents near St. Joe about 8:30 o'clock Saturday evening. A rifle bullet had entered his right temple, passing out through his mouth, and his neck was broken. The corpse was discovered by his father, Emanuel Ulm, and another son.
There is little foundation for a theory of suicide and not the slightest for suspicion of foul play, consequently it is generally accepted that his tragic end was solely due to an accident, though a rumor of his being jilted by a young lady sometime since is in circulation.
Ulm had attended a Sabbath school picnic Saturday, but returned home before his parents, changed his clothes and evidently started on a hunting expedition, as was his wont quite frequently. It is reasoned that in climbing the fence his gun was accidentally discharged and as the bullet struck him he fell, hitting his head against a tree and breaking his neck.
The deceased was about twenty-five years old and a bright young man of exceptional character.
